Thai PM Outlines Digital Pivot and Security Crackdown in Policy Debut

BANGKOK, 9 April 2026 - Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul unveiled a high-tech roadmap for Thailand during his policy statement to parliament, positioning AI and digital innovation as the primary engines for economic competition.

Under a five-pillar "cluster" management strategy, the government aims to modernize sectors from agriculture to tourism while setting a definitive goal for Thailand to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) by 2028.

To provide immediate relief, Anutin announced the "Khon La Khrueang Plus" stimulus, a co-payment scheme designed to boost domestic consumption while mandating digital upskilling for participants.

Beyond stimulus, the administration is pushing for structural shifts, including a transition to a voluntary military by hiring 100,000 personnel on four-year contracts to eventually replace conscription.

Security priorities will focus on a crackdown on "gray capital," call-center syndicates, and money laundering by choking off illegal financial routes. This includes a planned review of visa-free policies to close security loopholes and an expedited study on the potential termination of the 2001 MOU with Cambodia regarding overlapping maritime claims.

Anutin also committed to a Net Zero emissions goal and the creation of a carbon market to attract green investment.

Acknowledging global volatility, he asserted that the government would prioritize systemic debt reform and financial data integration to bring citizens back into the formal economy.

The Prime Minister emphasized that these measures are essential to ensure internal stability, boost national competitiveness, and restore global confidence in Thailand
