3 April 2026 - Permanent Secretary for Interior Unsit Sampuntharat has reported 192 arrests tied to forest encroachment and illegal burning across 17 northern provinces, as authorities step up efforts to address wildfires, haze, and PM2.5 pollution. The permanent secretary shared the update during a field visit to Chiang Mai yesterday (Apr 2), where officials are tracking air quality and fire conditions.
The arrests followed joint operations by administrative officials, local authorities, police, military personnel, and officers from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. Patrols have been carried out across forest areas in all 17 provinces in accordance with existing laws and official directives.
The enforcement effort was carried out in response to government policy requiring strict legal action against those responsible for forest encroachment and burning. Provincial governors, district chiefs, and relevant agencies have been instructed to enforce the law without exception as part of the broader crackdown.
Authorities said the offenders have contributed to worsening air pollution and widespread public impact across northern Thailand. Scientific findings link the fires and resulting haze to human activity, and officials said those found violating the law will face prosecution in all cases.
