2 April 2026 - PM2.5 levels in northern Thailand have reached red-level severity across 14 provinces, with air quality deteriorating to levels that pose health risks to the public.
Pollution remains critical across much of the North, including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, and Mae Hong Son, while several provinces in the Northeast are also experiencing rising particulate levels.
The situation is driven by stagnant weather, widespread forest fires, and cross-border haze carried by prevailing winds, with forecasts indicating that pollution may continue to worsen through early April.
Limited rainfall and reduced air circulation are expected to prolong the situation, as ongoing hotspots in Thailand and neighboring countries continue to contribute to high pollution levels.
Authorities are stepping up efforts to control fires and reduce emissions, deploying aircraft and drones in difficult terrain, alongside public awareness campaigns and alert systems to help mitigate health risks.
