February 17, 2026 — Khao Kheow Open Zoo has responded to online concerns about the cleanliness and living conditions of “Moo Deng,” a well-known pygmy hippopotamus.
The zoo said images circulating on social media likely show animal waste produced during the day, noting that hippos naturally defecate in water or on land to mark their territory. Keepers clean the enclosure every morning in line with international animal welfare standards set by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).
Officials emphasized that pygmy hippos require high humidity. The presence of soil, mud, and aquatic plants is part of a biologically appropriate habitat design that allows the animals to display natural behaviors and maintain healthy skin — not a sign of neglect.
The zoo also announced plans for a new 10-rai (about 4 acres) exhibit area, approved by the zoo’s board, to accommodate six pygmy hippos and seven common hippos in a more spacious, ecosystem-based environment. Construction will be carefully managed to minimize noise and disturbance, particularly to Moo Deng and her mother, Jona.
Khao Kheow Open Zoo reaffirmed its commitment to improving facilities while prioritizing animal welfare and said it welcomes public feedback through its official channels.
