Min Aung Hlaing to Attend Special ASEAN Meeting

Sen. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Myanmar, will attend a special meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) set in Indonesia on April 24, according to the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On April 17, Tanee Sangrat, director-general of the Department of Information and spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Brunei, as the ASEAN chair, convened the special meeting in Jakarta on April 24 and leaders of many ASEAN member states agreed to attend, including Sen-Gen Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. Some ASEAN state leaders had yet to respond to the invitation.

Mr Tanee said ASEAN had not decided whether the meeting should be physical, virtual or hybrid.

A source at Government House said that Thai Prime Minister and Defense Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had not responded to the invitation to the special meeting and had not ordered any officials to prepare his attendance at the meeting. The prime minister was waiting for a decision on how the meeting would be organized, the source said.
