Police Open COVID Field Hospital

The Immigration Bureau opened a field hospital as COVID-19 was spreading among detained illegal migrants.

Pol Gen Suwat Jangyodsuk, commissioner of the Royal Thai Police Office, inspected the field hospital of the Immigration Bureau opposite Boonyachinda Stadium on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road. The temporary facility was set up to treat infected migrant detainees as the number COVID-19 cases among them was at 96.

The infected migrants consisted of 91 men and five women. They were among 1,615 migrants, mostly Myanmar, detained at Bang Khen and Suan Phlu offices of the Immigration Bureau.

Pol Gen Suwat said detained COVID-19 cases were mostly asymptomatic and would be treated at the field hospital. A doctor, four nurses and two nurse assistants from Police General Hospital would be on duty there around the clock. Severely ill detainees will be referred to Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital.

Access to the field hospital will be restricted and there will be surveillance cameras.

The facility could admit up to 300 patients, the national police chief said. In addition, he ordered the Border Patrol Police to prepare a location for another field hospital in case that COVID-19 cases increase.

Immigration Bureau commissioner Pol Lt Gen Sompong Chingduang said detention facilities of the bureau were crowded and the condition helped spread the disease among detainees.
