Over 700,000 People Petition to Impeach EC

BANGKOK, March 26 (TNA) - About 725,000 people have signed a petition on the change.org website to impeach the election commissioners as of Tuesday morning amid alleged irregularities and confusion in the March 24 election.

An online user with the account name “WeloveThailand” launched an online signature gathering campaign to impeach the election commissioners, claiming the Sunday’s general election was marred by blunders and irregularities, the worst in Thai history.

The petition organizer cited the law about the public participation in politics, saying the name lists and evidence will be submitted to senators, who will forward the petition to the National Anti- Corruption Commission (NACC) for investigation.

The election commissioners will be suspended from their duty pending the probe.

If the NAAC finds that it is grounded, it will report to the Upper House to vote for the impeachment.

The signature campaign wanted 300,000 names to proceed but it is later adjusted to one million names after the number of supporters has exceeded its target.

Many people and netizens question the election commission’s work in organizing the election and vote counting.

For example, they question inconsistencies between the numbers for voter turnout and ballots cast in some voting constituencies and the lower-than –expected voter turnout of about 65 percent.
